Going Online the Weblog Way!

Welcome to the latest issue of IDEAS where we transit from being a paper-based newsletter to one that is totally online. What is also unique about the new version of IDEAS is that we are utilizing a Weblog publishing system to generate, manage and publish our newsletter.

IVLE

My Community

NUS students can now build their own virtual communities within the Integrated Virtual Learning Environment (IVLE). In their own ‘community’, owners can invite members to post announcements, participate in the online and offline discussion forums, upload files and also provide relevant links to interesting websites. In short, it is an online meeting place for students to discuss, share ideas and get to know each other in cyberspace.

E-Learning

Breeze Your Presentation

Macromedia Breeze is a new software solution that allows faculty to leverage on their Microsoft PowerPoint knowledge and expertise to create rich engaging and interactive contents from their desktop. From PowerPoint, faculty can re-purpose and upgrade their PowerPoint slides into interactive multimedia contents incorporating audio narration, Flash animation and surveys. Easy editing features that allow faculty to do post-production, cut and change slides are also available. If you are thinking of embarking on updating your PowerPoint slides or creating new content for the coming semester, why not try Macromedia Breeze.

E-Learning

Learning with Viewlets

Viewlets are small animated programs that run within a web browser that can be used to demonstrate computer software and show screen simulations. Through viewlets, you can demonstrate in a step-by-step approach with mouse and cursor movements, cut-outs and dialog bubbles to show exactly what a user has to do to apply or navigate your website. It is like running a video to show you how things work.

Faculty Voice

Dr Elizabeth Nair

Dr Elizabeth Nair first discovered the Integrated Virtual Learning Environment (IVLE) as an information technology novice. She now uses it to help manage and deliver the courses she teaches. Each semester, she engages a variety of tools in IVLE to enhance classroom teaching and communication amongst her students. As Faculty Voice turns on Dr Nair, who teaches research on personality and individual differences at the Department of Social Work & Psychology, she tells us more on her experience with the use of IVLE.
