IVLE

Tips to improve transfer speed on IVLE Workbins

During the exam period, students access IVLE unceasingly. Despite large bandwidth, IVLE access times and download speeds can be affected. To help alleviate this situation, you can help by reduce PowerPoint presentation sizes and reduce image sizes before uploading to the Workbin.

Reduce PowerPoint presentation size
One way to improve IVLE access (and save disk space) is to compress images in PowerPoint. This is the simplest way:

1. Open PPT presentation.

2. Click File > Save As

3. In the Save As dialog box, click Tools > Compress Pictures

4. Follow these settings, then click OK:
• Apply to All pictures in document
• Change resolution Web/Screen (unless you require high quality hardcopies)
• Check Compress pictures and Delete cropped areas of pictures

5. Click Apply to confirm.

6. Name your compressed presentation and Save.

Check to see how much space you have saved. There are more tips for reducing PowerPoint file sizes at Microsoft Office Online.

Reduce image size
Uploaded images should also be compressed. Images need not be larger than 1024 x 768 pixels at 72 dpi. This is currently the most common screen resolution. The dpi need not be higher unless the image is meant to be printed.

1. Open image in Photoshop (or any other image editing software).

2. Click Image > Image Size.

3. If your image is larger than 72 dpi, reduce it to 72 dpi. If your image is larger than 1024 x 768, resize it to 1024 x 768 or smaller.

Note: If Resample Image is checked, change the dpi first. This will reduce the dimensions automatically.

4. Click OK and save the image.
