New Services - Blog.nus, Wiki.nus and Online Mindmapping Tool

CIT has launched three new services, Blog.nus, Wiki.nus and the Mindmapping Tool. These three online services provide great power and flexibility to staff and students in teaching and learning.

Teaching Technologies Seminar on Thu 24 July 2008, 2pm

CIT is holding a Teaching Technologies Seminar on Thu 24 July 2008, 2pm at the CIT Auditorium. This programme will showcase technologies for lecture theatres which will allow wireless projection, enable mp3 recording and empower lecturers to be mobile.

AV course

CIT will be conducting a one-day AV course for third-year students at the Department of Architecture on Thu 28 Feb 2008. This is part of their visual/design enrichment programme. Students who attend this course will learn how to produce a short video, delving into various aspects of filmmaking - from planning to post-production.

CIT staff claim dual honours at NUS Quality Service Day 2007/08

Yasmin bte Musthafa received the prestigious NUS Quality Service Award in recognition for her consistenly high level of customer service. The Webcast Team won a Merit Award for their IQ Team Project, Remote Webcast, which has led to cost savings and productivity gains. Congratulations to our staff!

CIT has launched the eLearning Week website and blog. The website introduces the eLearning Week project, its objectives and CIT's role in the venture. The blog will be the source for updates, announcements, tips and features. Students and staff can subscribe to eLearning Week blog updates via the feed or via email.

eLearning Week

The Communications and New Media Programme at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will be holding an eLearning Week next semester. Scheduled to take place from 18 February 2008 to 22 February 2008, this initiative aims to familiarise staff and students with various eLearning tools and improve the University's ability to function in a quarantine situation. CIT staff are currently working with CNM teaching staff to gear up for this groundbreaking project.

Career Development Courseware via IVLE

With CIT's assistance, NUS Career Centre has developed a series of interactive courseware highlighting the finer points of career development. This suite of Breeze presentations emphasizes the importance of early career planning. It also aims to improve students' cover letter and resume writing technique and interview skills. Students can access the Career Development Courseware via IVLE.

Webcast Update

More than half of the Lecture Theatres in the various Faculties and Schools are now equipped with 3CCD cameras for webcasting. This allows for higher quality video capture. Remote webcasting has been enabled throughout NUS campuses, facilitating the recording of webcasts from a centralised remote location. In the coming Academic Year, webcasts will be supported on the Macintosh platform via Apreso.

LAMS (the Learning Activity Management System

CIT will be hosting a presentation on LAMS (the Learning Activity Management System), the world's leading Learning Design system. LAMS represents a new approach to e-learning based on sequences of collaborative learning activities. It allows instructors to create activity sequences using a drag and drop authoring environment, then run these activities with students, and monitor their progress.

Dr James Dalziel, Director of the Macquarie E-Learning Centre Of Excellence (MELCOE) at Macquarie University, will describe the background to Learning Design and LAMS, demonstrate LAMS, and also describe the LAMS Community, a global community of over 2000 LAMS users who discuss the use of LAMS and share LAMS designs through a repository.

Debut of IVLE 8

IVLE 8 will debut on Monday, 28 May 2007. This version is the first major upgrade since 2003. As we have overhauled the system extensively, we hope that you take note of the following information so that we can ensure a smooth transition to IVLE 8. Dates to note:

Campus Partnership Programme

CIT launches the Campus Partnership Programme. The aim of this programme is to engage faculty to use the most appropriate digital and audio visual technologies to enhance their teaching. The programme includes the formation of the IVLE Faculty Advisory Group; increased contact between CIT, Faculties and Schools; a comprehensive welcome package for new academic staff; feedback and statistic from CIT on usage of our services and an enhanced feedback mechanism for IVLE.

1st Prize in the Outstanding VOICE Participation Award

CIT received the 1st Prize in the Outstanding VOICE Participation Award (for departments with more than 25 staff) at the recent NUS Quality Service Day. The award is based on staff suggestion ratio, participation rate and suggestion implementation rate.

NUS Galleria

CIT, Computer Centre and NUS Libraries introduce the NUS Galleria, a multimedia repository containing video, audio and image files relating to the University. These cover a wide gamut of events and activities, spanning the length and breadth of NUS. Staff can also upload their faculty's or epartment's audio-visual materials for archival via Documentum.

Video Appreciation Course

CIT's Multimedia team conducted the inaugural Video Appreciation Course for NUS Staff on 13 September 2006. The participants gave positive feedback, sharing that they have learnt a lot about the art and science of the video production process.

Deployment of AV-IP converged devices

With the advent of audio-visual and IT technology convergence, IP devices can now support AV equipment. CIT and Extron Electronics will be organizing a ½ day seminar to explore and encourage the deployment of AV-IP converged devices. This seminar takes place on Tuesday, 26 September 2006 from 2 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. at the CIT Auditorium.

CPSrf promotes audience participation and provides instant and accurate feedback from students during lessons. IVLE 7.8 was launched on Saturday, 1 July 2006. This version upgrade introduces new features and improves existing tools. NUScast has been featured as a case study in the June issue of MIS (Managing Information Strategies) Asia magazine. The article, Born out of necessity, highlights the the history and impact of webcasting in NUS.

Case study on videoconferencing in the National University of Singapore

TANDBERG, a leading visual communication solutions provider, has released a case study on videoconferencing in the National University of Singapore [pdf]. The case study covers the University's use of videoconferencing for teaching and learning, adminstration as well as crisis management.

Virtual University for Small States of the Commonwealth

CIT is taking part in the second meeting of the Virtual University for Small States of the Commonwealth, organised by the Commonwealth of Learning. At the meeting, held from 10 to 13 April 2006, CIT will share its expertise on Creating Learning Objects using eXe. NUS faculty can also create their own learning objects with eXe. Student Assistantship Multimedia Certification Scheme

The Student Assistantship Multimedia Certification Scheme (SAMCS) was officially launched on Thursday, 30 March 2006. SAMCS is a chance for students with keen interest in filmmaking to learn specific video production skills in a graded manner within an apprentice-style work routine. There are four levels of certification corresponding to respective levels of payment. In the long term, the assistantship opens doors to exciting future employment in video/multimedia production houses.

Launch of NUS Radio Pulze

With technical support from CIT, NUS Radio Pulze was launched on Tuesday, 14 February. The student-run radio station is streamed online on weekdays. From noon to 2 p.m., Radio Pulze DJs run a live show featuring music, campus updates and news. Non-stop music is played from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Click on Listen NOW! on the Radio Pulze website to tune in to the station.

Virtual Lab

Associate Professor Victor Tan from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science has won the Best Paper Award at the Asian Technology Conference in Mathematics held in December 2005. Dr Tan's paper discusses his experience in creating the Virtual Lab on the MA1506 Mathematics II module website. CIT congratulates Dr Tan for his award-winning effort.

KEEpad

Interactivity is a key factor in capturing students’ attention. KEEpad facilitates interactivity in the class through a system of wireless input devices and a software addition to PowerPoint. CIT is organizing a KEEpad demonstration on Friday, 24 February 2005 at 10.00 a.m. in Central Library, Theatrette 1.

NUS Centennial Quality Service Day

CIT received two awards - an individual and group accolade - at the NUS Centennial Quality Service Day. CIT staff Nik Azizi Bin Mat Zin received the prize for the NUS staff with the highest number of VOICE suggestions. As a whole, CIT achieved the third most VOICE suggestions among departments with 25 or more staff. Read more at Knowledge Entreprise.

Launch of IVLE 7.7

IVLE 7.7 was launched on Saturday, 17 December 2005. This version introduces new features and improves existing tools. Secure Assessment, NETg integration and module website administration integration are among the wide-ranging additions to IVLE. The full list of enhancements is available here .

Students' Choice Award 2005/2006

The students have chosen, and the Students' Choice Award 2005/2006 goes to Mr Aaron Tan Tuck Choy's module website for CS1101X Programming Methodology. This is the second year running that Mr Tan, from the Department of Computer Science, School of Computing, has won the award. His module website garnered the highest percentage of votes among the modules in NUS.

Video Appreciation Course

CIT is conducting a one-day Video Appreciation Course on Thursday, 24 November 2005. The course will cover the usage of video in NUS, professional evaluation of videos as well as a practical session on the video production process in the University.

IVLE Secure Assessment

CIT introduces IVLE Secure Assessment . With this new service, faculty can conduct secure online assessments in a cheat-proof environment. Secure Assessment opens up new possibilities for examination options; it is powered by CISCO Secure Desktop and Computer Centre's CISCO SSL VPN.

Plagiarism.NUS e-module

CIT launches the Plagiarism.NUS e-module for NUS students. This highly-interactive software filled with case studies and scenarios aims to give students an understanding what constitutes plagiarism and the penalties involved.

Learning Portal

CIT introduces a new Learning Portal, designed to provide interactive web-based training for students and staff. You can take over 450 courses in two broad areas, Business & Professional Development and IT & Desktop Skills. The Learning Portal enables you to learn what you want, when you want in a fun and engaging manner.

IT Security Awareness

CIT, in collaboration with Computer Centre, has developed an online IT Security Awareness course. Targetted primarily at students, the course aims to promote IT security best practices, disseminate basic computer security knowledge and highlight the NUS Acceptable Use Policy for IT resources.

Suria available on NUScast

From Monday 1 August, Suria - the Malay-language MediaCorp television channel - will be available on NUScast . The addition of Suria brings the number of available channels to 10. These include news, education and free-to-air channels.

New IVLE user guides

CIT has produced new user guides for IVLE. The staff and student guides detail basic IVLE usage. Students will receive their user guides during matriculation. Faculty staff will receive the staff guides before classes begin in AY 2005/2006.

Launch of IVLE 7.6

IVLE 7.6 was launched on Saturday 16 July. This version features new functions and tools, redesigned interface and workflows as well as upgraded hardware and software. IVLE is now an Enterprise System on High Availability with Disaster Recovery.

Macromedia Breeze

Macromedia Asia Pacific and CIT will be conducting a free seminar on the latest version of Macromedia Breeze on Friday, 29 July 2005 from 1 p.m. to 2.30 p.m. The seminar will be held at the CIT Auditorium, Level 2, Computer Centre. Macromedia Breeze 5.0 enables faculty to easily enhance their presentations with rich multimedia content.

Audio lectures

CIT provides students with an auditory avenue to access their lectures. Faculty can now make webcast lectures available as streaming or downloadable audio lectures for students to listen on their personal portable music players. These audio files will be available via podcasts, as this push technology for audio content is popularly known.

You can now search within the CIT website using the Cicada search engine. The search link is found at the footer of every CIT webpage.

The Communicator Awards 2004 Video Competition

CIT's Multimedia Team clinched three prizes in The Communicator Awards 2004 Video Competition. The OSA Student Life Video 2004 received the Crystal Award of Excellence, an honour reserved for the most outstanding entries. Our videos for the NUS Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Initiative (NUSNNI) and the Centre for English Language Education (CELC) were conferred with an Award of Distinction and an Honorable Mention respectively.

NUS Open House

The NUS Open House will be held on Saturday, 12 March 2005. There will be faculty exhibitions, admissions talks and other activities and events. CIT encourages all students and staff in promoting NUS as the tertiary institution of choice.

MindManager for Professionals in Education seminar

The Faculty of Medicine IT Unit and CIT are jointly organizing a MindManager for Professionals in Education seminar. This free one-hour seminar will focus on the use of MindManager software in conceptualizing Mind Maps. Thursday, 24 February 2005, 3.30 p.m. at MD 11, Seminar Rooms 1-3, Faculty of Medicine.

Multimedia Student Assistant Certification Programme

CIT has initiated the Multimedia Student Assistant Certification Programme. Through this programme, students will be trained and certified at four levels of expertise. This allows CIT to employ them as multimedia/video production staff, especially for major events which require extra manpower.

Special Commendation Award for The Nation's Health: Lessons from SARS

CIT and the Department of Community, Occupational and Family Medicine (COFM) were given a Special Commendation Award at the NUS University Awards 2004 on 12 May for developing the University's first completely online module - The Nation's Health: Lessons from SARS. More than 29,000 NUS students completed this module via IVLE as part of their compulsory Graduation Requirement.
