iCreate Mobility Challenge 2012

Cool mobile apps that surprise and delight the NUS students — built by developers like you!

This competition aims to challenge you to create mobile apps to enhance student's education experience and campus life on mobile platforms. If you have what it takes, come and join us in this year's iCreate Mobility Challenge which gives you the opportunity to showcase your talent and your creativity. This is the perfect chance to help improve and enrich the students’ experience at NUS.

Winning entries will receive attractive prizes.

1.0   Prizes

All participants who submit their apps will receive a token of appreciation.
Tokens will be distributed during registration at the Awards Ceremony.

The prizes are as follows*:

  • First Prize: The new iPad for each team member + SGD $2,000 for the team
  • Second Prize: iPad2 for each team member + SGD $1,000 for the team
  • Third Prize: Android tablet for each team member
  • Fourth Prize: Android handphone for each team member
  • Fifth Prize: 500GB portable hard disk for each team member

The Blackberry Award for Top 5 winners
(prizes generously sponsored by RIM)

  • Each member of the 5 winning teams can win a BlackBerry PlayBook and Smartphone, if their application is successfully ported over to PlayBook/BB10 using HTML5/WebWorks or Android.

2.0   Eligibility

The iCreate Mobility Challenge is open only to NUS students*. Each team can have up to 4 NUS students. The students in the team should not be part of another team.

The ideas contributed must be different from the existing NUS mobile applications of the same platform. These applications can be found at http://m.nus.edu.sg. For those who participated in the iCreate Mobility Challenge 2011, you cannot submit your last year work (recycle or upgrade).

*Must have a valid NUS student account when the registration closes.

4.1   Preparation
Form a team of not more than 4 NUS students to participate. The students in the team should not be part of another team.

Developing IVLE mobile Applications
For those teams interested in developing mobile applications for IVLE, the IVLE Learning API (LAPI) is available at the LAPI website. Additional information or help with the LAPI requests can be made through the iCreate Mobility Challenge 2012 forum on IVLE.

Please note that the LAPI page only shows the schema and documentation of the functions. You will need the LAPI Key to be able to view the actual data returned with the given parameters passed in. Grab your LAPI Key now!

4.2   Training
We will be providing crash-course basic training in Android, HTML5 for Blackberry, iOS and Windows Phone for interested participants. Do indicate in the registration form should you want to attend this training.

  1. Please bring your own Intel Mac (PowerPC Mac cannot work).
  2. Use Mac OS X Snow Leopard if possible, with an SDK that supports iOS 4.
  3. The training will not teach programming itself, e.g. algorithms. We assume students already know what that is.
  4. The training will teach basics on how to get started in iOS coding. It will not deal much on advance topics.

Before the actual competition begins, we will be having a FAQ session to run through the final Terms and Conditions along with a walk through of the available APIs, Web Services and to answer any questions you might have. 6th July - Application Submission
You have to submit your source code together with a short video or some screenshots by 6th of July 2359hrs to the designated folder in the iCreate Mobility Challenge 2012 workbin. The video/screenshots, along with the webcast of your presentation & demo, will be published on the website for SMS voting.

All submitted applications must be in English.

*Do note that all submitted source code belongs to NUS. We will acknowledge the work done by the teams should the codes be used in an actual NUS application.

24th to 27th July - Presentation
We will confirm the presentation slot with each team after the submission on 6th July.

Each presentation slot is 30 minutes long. The suggested timeline is as follows, please ensure that you demo your application.

  • 20 minutes – Setup & presentation
  • 5 minutes – Demonstration of your application
  • 5 minutes – Q & A

There will be 3 judges. The judges will evaluate each team and give it a score of one (1) to five (5) on each of the four judging criteria below. This will constitute 60% of your final score.

  1. Originality: Is the application a new idea or does it create a new type of application?
  2. Platform: How well are the platform's built-in functionality and features being used? E.g. location based services, camera, augmented reality
  3. Interface: Is it easy to navigate and appealing?
  4. X-Factor: Is the application an everyday necessity that students will find useful?

The presentation will be webcast live for students and staff to view and to vote.

24th July to 1st August - SMS Voting
The SMS voting opens from 24th July to 1st August midnight. 30% of your final score comes from SMS voting.

  • Every mobile number is allowed to vote only once
  • 3 points will be awarded for each NUS registered mobile number that votes for your team (Please check your IVLE profile page and ensure that your mobile number is displaying correctly. If not, please update it in myISIS.)
  • 1 point will be awarded for every other mobile number that votes for your team

7th August: Showcase and Award Ceremony
Please indicate whether your team members are coming for the Showcase and/or Award Ceremony at the registration page.

Showcase

  • We will be getting people from the industry to come and view your works. They will also vote for your application during this showcase. The voting from the showcase will constitute 10% of your final score.
  • Time: 10:00AM to 1:00PM

Lunch

  • Time: 1:00PM to 2:30PM

Award Ceremony

  • Time: 2:30PM to 4:30PM

Winners will be announced during the Award Ceremony. The results will also be published on the website. All winning teams must show up to receive the prizes.
